University of Cape Coast (UCC)
Project Lead
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is a public university located along the coast of Ghana with its foundations established in October 1962. It is organised into five (5) Colleges and fourteen (14) Faculties/Schools as well as other centres of specialisation. The university’s activities include research, teaching, consultancy and innovation towards the vision to become a strongly positioned university with world-wide acclaim. Leading the implementation of the E-MAGIN Ghana project is one of the activities that support this vision. This role is enhanced by previous work on the SWITCH Africa Green phase I project and the establishment of the Eco Business and Policy Centre. The UCC project team has therefore gathered extensive experience in e-waste management processes in Ghana, particularly in areas of inventory assessment as well as the development and implementation of capacity building programmes for MSMEs. Also, UCC has provided technical trainings on collection and financing models for e-waste management systems, mentoring and coaching towards enhancing the capacities of stakeholders, and promoting the exchange of experiences from the implementation of the e-waste management system. UCC has organised workshops and roundtable discussions with major stakeholders, including national and international agencies, parliamentarians, industry, investors, NGOs and research and development institutions to raise their awareness about the initiative undertaken to build an integrated and sustainable e-waste exchange system in Ghana.
Due to UCC’s experience in working with formal sector associations and building capacities of workers from the informal economy, it will take the lead in WP2 and WP4 of the E-MAGIN project.
