Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre (GNCPC)
The Ghana National Cleaner Production Center (GNCPC) is a subsidiary of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Ghana and was inaugurated on 20th January, 2012 and registered as a company limited by guarantee in March, 2014.
The mandate of the centre is to develop and implement projects and activities that will promote concepts of resource efficiency and cleaner production initiatives and capacity building as well as low-carbon clean technology in areas of energy, water and raw-material efficiency and waste management practices in industries that would result in reduced manufacturing cost, lowered environmental pollution and toxicity in products, increased resource productivity & profits and improved health and safety performance.
The GNCPC’s focus is to develop, offer and promote business advisory services and investment porfolios businesses, coaching, promote policy reforms at the SMEs and national level that influence compliance , undertake investment activities including shareholdings in businesses relating to RECP promotion and well as engaging in consultancy services to keep the centre in business.
Under the “Ghana E-waste Model” (GEMOD) project, GNCPC has provided extensive inputs on the set-up of collection centres and contributed to drafting of a comprehensive e-waste legislation, thus contributing to the implementation of the Hazardous and Electronic Waste Control and Management Act, Act 917 as well as its complementing Legal Instrument (LI) 2250. GNCPC is also currently implementing the Swiss funded project “Sustainable Recycling Industries” (SRI) with the aim to supporting the sustainable integration and participation of SMEs in developing countries the global recycling of secondary metals in close cooperation with informal workers.
Due to the strong ties with governmental agencies and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), GNCPC will take the lead in WP3 to (re-)establish a collection mechanism as per the enforcement requirements of Act 917 and LI 2250.
